Breast Cancer: Prevention & Detection

Image

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is a perfect time to re-educate ourselves and others on the significance of this disease and how to detect it in a timely manner.

Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent types of cancer in the United States and it affects women of all races. Detecting breast cancer early is the key to treating it effectively – but taking preventative measures to reduce your risk of developing breast cancer is the best way of maintaining your health.

The Mayo Clinic recommends implementing the following adjustments to your lifestyle to reduce your risk of becoming more susceptible of developing breast cancer:

• Stop Smoking Immediately. Smoking has been inexorably linked to breast cancer as well as other types of cancers, such as lung cancer. From the moment you stop smoking and each day thereafter, your risk of developing breast cancer decreases.

• Limit Your Alcohol Intake. Studies have shown that excessive alcohol consumption increases your risk of developing breast cancer. Consume alcoholic beverages in moderation and limit yourself to having less than four drinks per week.

• Keep Your Weight Down. Obesity and being overweight can also increase the risk of breast cancer.  Eating a healthy diet every day and staying active regularly will decrease your chances of developing this disease.

• Schedule A Mammogram. Having a mammogram done at least once a year is essential to detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages if it has developed. Speak with your doctor to determine the appropriate mammogram schedule for you.

Adopting this proactive approach to remain in good health throughout your life is an important life-saving strategy that you owe to yourself and to your loved ones. Devoting just a few minutes to yourself each day to implement the above preventative measures will help keep you aware of any changes your body may experience as well as give you peace of mind.
